World Euchre Championship

The World Euchre Championship has quickly become a hallmark event for New Glarus, drawing visitors from across the United States and Canada, and generating significant support for local initiatives. Since its inception in 2023, the championship has grown to become the largest annual fundraiser for New Glarus Cares, bringing much-needed funds and attention to community projects while also boosting the local economy.

The Event

The 2024 World Euchre Championship was nothing short of a triumph, with over 400 contestants converging on New Glarus for a weekend of competitive card play. Sponsored by prominent names like Bicycle Cards, Jack Link's, New Glarus Brewing Company, Decatur Dairy, and New Glarus Fest Haus, the event attracted participants from near and far, including a dedicated player who made the journey all the way from Las Vegas, Nevada. The championship featured two major tournaments: a singles competition on Saturday and a team event on Sunday, both of which were highly anticipated by Euchre enthusiasts.

What We Did

New Glarus Cares organized a well-coordinated event that not only highlighted the game of Euchre but also showcased the vibrant spirit of the New Glarus community. The tournament was supported by over 50 volunteers, four food vendors, eight exhibitors, five event sponsors, and more than 70 local businesses that sponsored tables. The community’s involvement was crucial to the success of the event, ensuring that everything ran smoothly and that participants had an unforgettable experience.

The singles tournament on Saturday saw Yamuna Reddi from Chicago claim victory with an impressive 107 points. On Sunday, Team Wolf, consisting of Todd Wolf from Washington, D.C., and Judith Wolf from Dubuque, IA, took the top spot in the doubles tournament with a total of 105 points. The event also featured a $2500 raffle, with lucky winners Zenda Klassy of New Glarus and Chris Olson of Rewey, Wisconsin, taking home the top prizes.

The Impact

The World Euchre Championship has become a significant contributor to the New Glarus economy, bringing in participants and visitors from outside the area who, in turn, support local businesses. The influx of visitors during the championship weekend provides a boost to our stores, restaurants, and shops, demonstrating the event's positive impact on the local economy. In addition to the economic benefits, the funds raised during the championship are directed towards important community projects. This year, the proceeds will be dedicated to building a new inclusive playground at Candy Cane Park, a project that will benefit families and children in New Glarus for years to come.

Community Involvement

The success of the World Euchre Championship would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the New Glarus community. Local businesses stepped up as sponsors, volunteers donated their time and energy, and residents embraced the event, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all who attended. The collaboration between New Glarus Cares, the event sponsors, and the broader community exemplified the spirit of togetherness that defines our town.

The championship also served as a platform for New Glarus to shine on a larger stage. The involvement of sponsors like Bicycle Playing Cards and the United States Playing Card Company added prestige to the event, attracting even more participants and attention from outside the region. This growing recognition helps solidify New Glarus as a destination for Euchre enthusiasts and highlights our town's commitment to fostering community and preserving our unique local culture.
