Final Listening Session for New Inclusive Playground

New Glarus residents are encouraged to mark their calendars for a pivotal event in the development of an inclusive playground at Candy Cane Park. The Village of New Glarus Parks & Recreation committee has announced a listening session, scheduled for Wednesday, March 13th at 6:30 PM in the Village Hall board room. This session presents a final opportunity for community members to provide feedback and insights on the plans for this innovative playground.

Led by New Glarus Cares, this initiative aims to create a space where children of all ages and abilities can play together. Recognizing the importance of incorporating diverse perspectives into the project, New Glarus Cares hosted two intimate listening sessions late last year.

Shelly Johnson, President of New Glarus Cares, highlighted the profound impact of these listening sessions on shaping the plans for the inclusive playground so far. "Our Board recognized the importance of seeking input from a diverse group of stakeholders. The stories and insights from those families have been instrumental in informing our plans for equipment, restrooms and parking to ensure the overall inclusivity within the park." Johnson emphasized.

The upcoming listening session serves as a vital opportunity for the community to contribute their perspectives and ideas to this transformative project. By actively engaging with residents, New Glarus Cares and the Village Parks & Recreation committee are committed to ensuring that the inclusive playground reflects the values and needs of the entire community.

The development of the inclusive playground at Candy Cane Park represents a significant step forward in promoting inclusivity and fostering a sense of belonging within New Glarus. As the community comes together to participate in this final listening session, Johnson said, “It underscores the collective commitment to creating spaces where every child, regardless of ability, can thrive and enjoy the benefits of play.”

New Glarus Cares has obtained an $80,000 grant from a private foundation and another $80,000 investment from the Village of New Glarus. New Glarus Cares is also actively working to raise the remaining funds necessary to build the park.
