Candy Cane Park Greenspace

In a historic moment for New Glarus, the community came together to protect a cherished piece of greenspace from development, ensuring it remains a natural sanctuary for generations to come. The successful purchase of the 2.2-acre lot adjacent to Candy Cane Park, spearheaded by New Glarus Cares, is a testament to the power of community action and the shared love for our town's natural beauty.

The Project

The project to preserve the greenspace near Candy Cane Park began in October 2022, when New Glarus Cares was formed to address pressing issues within the community. The organization quickly recognized the threat posed by potential development on the land behind Shepherd of the Hills Church, a beloved area that had served as a peaceful retreat for decades. The goal was clear: to raise enough funds to purchase the land and protect it as greenspace in perpetuity, ensuring that it would remain a place of tranquility and recreation for the people of New Glarus.

What We Did

New Glarus Cares mobilized the community, launching a fundraising campaign that garnered widespread support. Through grassroots efforts, the organization raised $75,000, which was then matched by a generous $75,000 contribution from the Only in Wisconsin Giving Foundation, the charitable arm of New Glarus Brewing Company. This combined effort resulted in the $150,000 needed to purchase the property. On a significant day in February 2024, New Glarus Cares presented a $75,000 check to the Only in Wisconsin Giving Foundation, officially securing the land for the community. Shelly Johnson, representing New Glarus Cares, then deeded the land to the Village of New Glarus, with restrictions in place to ensure it remains greenspace forever.

The Impact

The impact of this successful acquisition cannot be overstated. The preservation of the 2.2-acre lot adjacent to Candy Cane Park means that the community has safeguarded a vital natural space that contributes to the well-being and quality of life of New Glarus residents. This greenspace will continue to serve as a place for relaxation, play, and community gatherings, free from the threat of development. The project also stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved when a community unites around a common cause, with lasting benefits for current and future generations.

Community Involvement

The success of this project was made possible by the collective efforts of the New Glarus community. From individual donations to the significant support from local businesses and organizations, the fundraising campaign demonstrated the strong sense of community that defines our town. The Only in Wisconsin Giving Foundation played a critical role by matching the funds raised, underscoring the importance of partnerships in achieving community goals. This project, led by New Glarus Cares, is a shining example of how collaboration and dedication can lead to meaningful and lasting change.
