Zenda Klassy’s Gift to Candy Cane Park
Zenda Klassy, who was born in New Glarus and spent her entire life living here, left a lasting legacy through her love for her community. After winning one of the $2,500 World Euchre Championship raffle drawings in May, Zenda chose to use a portion of her winnings to purchase a new picnic table and park bench for the new playground at Candy Cane Park.
Zenda spent time at the park with her grandchildren over the years and wanted to contribute to the playground so future generations could enjoy the playground the way she did. She also used to sled down the hill at Candy Cane Park at a time when there were few houses on the south side of the village. She said back then you could ride a sled almost to 2nd Street where her father owned a small textile factory.
Sadly, Zenda passed away on July 12, 2024 before she could see the completed playground. However, her gift will be enjoyed by families and visitors for years to come. The table and bench she funded will serve as a gathering place for those who visit the park, reminding everyone of her generosity and love for the community.
After her passing, Zenda's husband, Larry Klassy, also generously donated the remainder of the raffle winnings to New Glarus Cares. Together, their contributions have made a meaningful impact on the Candy Cane Park playground project, ensuring it will be a cherished space for all.
Zenda’s legacy of kindness and community spirit will live on, providing comfort and joy to future generations in the town she loved so much. A small plate will be installed on both the picnic table and park bench soon to recognize Zenda’s gift.
